Looking forward to going to the Bell Centre this weekend but so far this week's highlight was seeing and talking to the hockey powers that be across the aisle from us, here at the IIFF junior's tournament in Ottawa.

Stevie Y was looking very cute (according to Charlaine), Brent Sutter was diplomatic, Got an autograph from Bob Clarke (ewww!) but the BEST was when I asked Brian Burke to sign my Montreal Canadiens jersey! I didn't know it before hand, but most of the section was watching and gave a concerted laugh at Burke's stern, sterile, decisive, dismissive 'No!' to my request. That's all he said... 'No!'

What an opportunity! Over a beer about 4 minutes later I dared Dan Crandles to EVER get the chance to ask Bob Gainey to sign his Leafs jersey (heaven forbid Gainey should ever be exposed that!).

I feel like I played the right bauer in the jib-jab ever-going sparring dialog between us Canadiens fans and those Leafs fans!!

NEW YORK -- With drama and flair, the New York Yankees completed another August sweep of the Boston Red Sox and moved into prime position for a September playoff run.

There was a week's worth of highlights during the Yankees' 5-0 victory yesterday: a no-hit bid by Chien-Ming Wang into the seventh inning, a pair of big home runs by Robinson Cano off Curt Schilling, a disputed play involving Alex Rodriguez that led to the ejection of Boston manager Terry Francona.

And then in the ninth, Yankees rookie sensation Joba Chamberlain was tossed following a pair of pitches over Kevin Youkilis' head.

It's not even Labor Day, and already there was late-season passion between these old foes.

"If that young man is trying to get our attention, he did a very good job," Francona said.

Edwar Ramirez, another rookie, completed a two-hitter and the Yankees' first shutout of Boston since Sept. 11, 2005.

Last year, the Yankees swept a five-game series at Boston from Aug. 18-21, opening a 6 1/2 -game lead in the AL East.

It's so different this season. The Yankees, who outscored the Red Sox 14-6 in the three games and outhit them 30-13, closed within five games of the division leaders and put themselves in position to possibly end the day in the wild-card lead. New York, which began the day one percentage point behind Seattle, had not finished a day in playoff position since April 10, when the Yankees were 4-3.

Chamberlain's ejection left bad feelings all around. Throwing 98-99 m.p.h., he pumped a pitch over Youkilis' head with one out in the ninth. The next pitch went to nearly the same spot, and Youkilis stared as plate umpire Angel Hernandez ejected the pitcher.

Chamberlain was shocked, saying both pitches slipped.

Youkilis was angry.

"I didn't see any other pitches going that far out of the strike zone," he said.

"Who knows what it really meant?"

Steve will step aside and will be joining us at Dean’s after his work tourney since nobody responded to say they had ( in the immortal words of Lee Smithson) :

“... to flea bath their dog that morning, spousal objections(objections from your spouse not objections about your spouse or any others), Forgot they were flying to Paris that day, forgot that Sunday is the day after Saturday or day before Monday therefore not a good day to be engaging in this sort of activity???”

We start at 11, breakfast can be available, Rob I assume you’d like to call them at 519-693-4921 to let them know we’re coming and make sure they can do 2 eggs any-style, and probably ask about the meatloaf too! And reacquaint yourself with the owners kids too of course.

If my memory is correct, Hard hats recommended on a few of the holes on the original 9. If you’ve played certain parts of River Road, you’ll know what I mean. Half hour approx depending on where the starting point in London is. We might get Slippery to play if we ask.

I'm fine with September 15th and Firerock. We should know how many are playing before we approach Firerock to see what kind of deal they will give us. As this is a 'tournament' course, we should talk to them and book early in case we need to find an alternative (such as Echo Valley, Wardsville, etc.).

Where will it all end? After those friendly victories in Holland and
Germany, the Republic of Ireland found serious conflict no less to their
taste and began their World Cup by beating Italy. Soundly.

Ray Houghton's early goal proved the only one of a match in which Ireland's
blanket defence rendered vain all the creative endeavours of Roberto Baggio,
who adorned this marvellous occasion but was not allowed to influence it
because for 90 mins Jack Charlton's sweat-soaked soldiers stayed about as
close as ranks can get.

Though it almost insults their indivisibility to pick out the old sweat
McGrath, I shall do so because he stayed as cool of mind as the air was hot,
and eternally vigilant in snuffing out sources of danger; altogether a more
impressive figure than his fellow 34-year-olds, the creaking Baresi and
Tassotti, at the other end. The newcomer Babb was superb alongside McGrath,
while Irwin demonstrated why Charlton can afford to leave young Gary Kelly
on the bench and Coyne was a durable lone front-runner.

But Ireland were above all a team, and to say that they defended as such,
doing little else, for slightly over half the match ought not to obscure
that they amply deserved to win it. When Sheridan hit the crossbar 18
minutes from the end, indeed, he ought to have added a tension-reliever to
the goal Houghton had clipped home, with great resourcefulness, helping
Ireland to be patient and use their 4-5-1 system to maximum conservative
effect, going forward in rationed bursts.

They are not the youngest of teams here and and have to be careful, but the
back of qualification has been broken in advance of meetings with Mexico in
Orlando on Friday and Norway back here in New Jersey the following Tuesday.
Back home, you might even say yesterday's weather was more suitable for the
growing of tropical plants than shamrocks.

The packed Giants stadium was a fine sight, and overwhelmingly friendly to
the Irish, whose supporters' tricolours were draped all the way round the
balconies on each level. When these countries last clashed in the World Cup,
it was in Rome four years ago, but now the balance of fervour had radically
shifted. Jack's lads must have felt like representatives of the host nation.
And they soon caused jubilation.

Baresi was already looking uncomfortable and his attempts to get the ball
out of danger when Coyne challenged so lacked conviction that Houghton was
able to collect and make almost a full turn before lifting his left-footed
shot over Pagliuca, who had come too far out. Houghton again! The Scots-born
midfielder had launched Ireland's 1988 European Championship campaign with a
headed winner against England in Stuttgart. Now here he was doing the trick,
at 32, not so long after Charlton had been openly doubting his worth to the
side.

Italy always had at least an equal share of possession, almost everything
being channelled through Roberto Baggio, whose silken touches were of a
markedly different material from anything else on the field. Later, Baggio
fed Maldini, whom Keane did extremely well to stop as he prepared to shoot,
and executed a delightfully nimble one-two with Signori to make the opening
for a drive that thumped against the uncannily positioned McGrath.

Signori, at last skipping away from McGrath, had Italy's best chance but
leapt with frustration as it went wide; for a man who had scored 49 goals in
a mere 56 Serie A matches since joining Lazio from Foggia, one might have
expected greater precision.

Before the match some of those Italian critics who are forever looking for
ill omens had groaned at the news that Arrigo Sacchi's front two would be
Baggio and Signori. The last time they played as a partnership Italy
suffered a humiliating practice-defeat by a fourth division side. But Baggio
and Signori were less to blame for Italy's failings here than the
predictability of their midfield and the fragility of their defence. Not to
mention the organisation and resilience of their opponents.

Still, Sacchi decided a shuffle might help and sent on Massaro for the
second half as his main striker with Baggio, moving Signori aside to the
left to produce a formation familiar from the pre-tournament friendlies. But
Italy, as it turned out, were not just different in shape. They increased
their tempo, tried a little adventure and briefly looked the more
penetrative for it. Dino Baggio strode into the Irish penalty area, where
the tackle by Babb that brought him down prompted an appeal, and, from the
Dutch referee, a firm rejection. Roberto Baggio again found a full-blooded
drive thudding against the ubiquitous McGrath.

Just then one realised it had been an awful long time since Ireland
attacked, and wondered if the sustenance of pressure against them had begun
to take a toll of their legs. But it is dangerous even to speculate about
frailty in Ireland when they are in the mood. Almost immediately they poured
forward, Coyne to the fore, the ball breaking off him to Houghton, who made
Pagliuca move sharply to save. Keane then got to the bye line and pulled
back for Sheridan, unmarked, to lean just a little and allow his shot from
eight yards to fly up and kiss the bar on its way over. There were more near
or nearish things around Pagliuca, and the Italians realised it was not to
be their day.

It was the first time Ireland had so much avoided defeat in seven meetings
with them - and the first time in 13 World Cups that Italy have lost their
opening match. The market in rotten tomatoes is expected to move
substantially unless they recover in time for Thursday's encounter with the
Norwegians here.

B.C. researchers found the risk of gout was 40 per cent lower for men who drank four to five cups a day than for non-coffee drinkers. The news in today's Journal of Rheumatology comes just in time for summer: It's been shown that drinking two or more beers a day can increase the risk of gout.

A form of arthritis, gout mostly strikes men over 40, predominantly in their big toes. It's made worse by eating liver, kidney, shellfish and scallops.

And should anyone with arthritis have trouble opening that jar of coffee, Maxwell House is introducing a new Arthritis Society-endorsed EZ Grip Lid, citing the needs of boomers who represent one-third of Canadians.

One of the city's newest employees is smart, highly qualified and gets along well with her co-workers.
But she hasn't been fixed yet.
Meet Scratch, a three-year-old border collie hired by the city to roust the gangs of geese from the grounds of Storybook Gardens.

"She's an employee," says Tom Hudecki, assistant zookeeper at Storybook Gardens. "But you want to treat her like a pet, too."

The problem, more specifically, is goose poop.
Stroll a short distance through Storybook Gardens or Springbank Park and you'll almost certainly encounter green blobs of goose crap.

"It's a big concern for our patrons," admits John Riddell, manager of Storybook Gardens. "Last year, it showed up on our surveys as one of the top things that annoyed our guests."

There's not only the unpleasant -- and potentially unhealthy -- side-effects of goose feces. There's also the chance that a goose -- particularly one guarding a nest of eggs this time of the year -- might react aggressively to a curious child.

"They do nip at you and they will give you a pretty good whack on the back of the head," says Hudecki, adding the geese will hiss, bite and even strike a perceived predator with a wing. "We had a (nesting) pair that was so aggressive, the gardeners didn't want to go anywhere near them."

The weather vane swings west this time, and the suggestion has been made that we move to "Royal" Oxbow Glen Golf and Country Club http://www.oxbowglen.com. Seconders?

I think they left the part out where what you look down on is the 11th green with a large whale buried under it, but never mind…

Research shows you can improve your golf swing by watching TV
LONDON, ON, April 27 /CNW/ - You can improve your own game by watching
sports on TV according to new research conducted at The University of Western
Ontario. For the first time, research has proven that it's possible to learn
complex physical actions by observing others.
Paul Gribble, Departments of Psychology and Physiology & Pharmacology at
Western, and his student Andrew Mattar, found that when observing others
performing complex motor tasks, we cannot help but to learn as well. Their
unique findings represent the first direct evidence that we can form new
"internal models" for motor control solely on the basis of visual observation.
The findings were published in the recent edition of Neuron.
"It would seem that the hours spent watching sports on television can not
only tell our conscious minds about what movements need to be made, but more
importantly can inform our motor systems about how to make them," says
Gribble.
Previous research has shown that when observing others perform motor
tasks, people can learn something about "what" to do. This study found that
individuals also learn "how" to perform complex motor tasks merely by
observing others. Gribble and Mattar also found that observing the actions of
another, sets off the same brain circuits responsible for planning and
carrying out our own actions.
"One of the striking findings of our study is that motor learning can
happen without actually moving - just by observing someone else moving," he
says. "The motor systems - the brain areas involved in generating movements -
are being subconsciously activated when we observe the actions of others. Our
brains are essentially imitating the actions we observe, in our minds, without
us being aware of it."
